We would sure love to be in Charlotte this week.

The inaugural Charlotte Craft Beer Week, an ambitious 11-day event, is offering about 30 tastings and dinners – and even a beer school – from March 18-28 in locations throughout the Charlotte area. The event will bring some of the nation’s best brewers to the city – along with local and N.C. brewers – to talk about their craft. It could be the finest, most diverse beer gathering Charlotte has seen… Read more about the event!

We would also like to give a big shout out to Rick Lyke who helped his brother come up with this invent, but more importantly is the founder of Pints for Prostates!

That seems to be the sentiment online, where photos of our women’s hockey team celebrating with beer, champagne and cigars after their gold medal win Thursday night have spread like wildifre. Reports of the ladies’ on-ice celebration have appeared on hundreds of news websites across the globe, from The New York Times (“A toast to hockey gold, but at what cost?”) to the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph to Cigar Aficionado (seriously).

But the overwhelming opinion online seems to be that everyone should relax and grab a cold one. Most international media outlets – even the crabby Brits – have taken the high road and avoided outright criticism of the girls, while Joe and Jane web-surfer are rallying to Team Canada’s defence.

“It’s not like the girls were having an orgy on the ice. They were celebrating their well-deserved win,” wrote a user calling herself Karen in Los Angeles, commenting on an NBCsports.com poll that asks, “Did the Canadian women’s hockey team go overboard in their celebration?”

Nearly two-thirds of the poll’s respondents have said no…

Now being a woman myself (roar), I didn’t get into beer until I turned 21. I was never a fan of the taste or smell of hops and barley, and quite frankly, when someone burped with a belly full of beer, I wanted to hang myself because I hate the smell of moldy bread. But I digress…

I’m trying to get more women into beer drinking. Not just college girls, but all women. Why? Well, the better question is, why not? Alcohol, in general, is good for you in responsible quantities. It can help keep your blood pressure down and one to two beers a day (well 3-4 for me since I’m a seasoned yet responsible alcoholic) can protect you from HEART DISEASE. No, you didn’t die and go to heaven. It’s totally true. Plus, you become more relaxed and able to overcome social-related fears, like wearing the ovaries on the outside and telling that cute guy how cute you think he is. So if there’s any women out there reading this, soak this all in. The easiest way to transition from wine coolers and Smirnoff Ice to hearty beer is to take steps.

Step one: Try a specialty beer

A specialty beer is a beer that is flavored with different extracts. Some beers are flavored with fruit, chocolate, candy or what ever else comes to mind. There’s even a beer that tastes like pizza (mammamiapizzabeer.com. I can’t make this up.) But I know that a lot of women enjoy something that may have a sweet taste to it so I would try Sea Dog, a blueberry flavored beer.

<—— This beer is good, but you may notice a sour aftertaste. It’s only because the blueberry extract is on the acidic side. But don’t fret. You will soon realize that most, if not all beers have an aftertaste. If you don’t like blueberry, they even have an apricot flavor. Go to your local liquor store to find a flavored beer (popular flavors are blueberry, raspberry and honey) and try whatever seems the most adventurous. Most liquor stores let you purchase a single beer so take advantage of that. There’s nothing wrong with sampling.

Step 2: Drink it SUPER cold

Drinking it when it’s really cold (not frozen) will help bypass that “beer” taste. Even the worst tasting beers have 5 minutes of being fantastic when it’s fresh out of the freezer.

Step 3: Pair it with food

When you drink beer with food, especially something savory, it can enhance the flavor of the food, or the food can enhance the taste of the beer. Fast food is a good choice. Italian food always taste good with beer and Mexican food tastes even better with it. Pizza (and chinese food, at least for me and my homies) is the staple of beer pairing because, for one, it’s super portable (you can hold a slice with one and a beer in the other).

Try these steps, slowly of course and maybe beer will become more appealing to you. If you have any questions about specialty beers, leave a comment below.

(it’s artsy, not suggestive)

So last night my brother whom I haven’t seen in a little while, after giving me 3 Pina Coladas, said to me “Hey you want a beer?” Me, who will never deny myself a buzz replied with an excited “Sure!” When he comes within reach, he hands me this tall silver can which said on it Steel Reserve. I’ve never had this beer before, so I tried it (I’m an Aries so I’m pretty adventurous.) When the flavor and the carbonation hit my lips and then my tongue, I became slightly confused. I didn’t know if it tasted really good or really awful, so I commenced in chugging it. Needless to say, I began to feel the effects of this I-Couldn’t-Afford-Corona-And-I-Only-Had-5-Bucks-On-Me beer. I thought Natty Ice put me on my ass. Well,it does but Steel Reserve did something else to me. While I was in his bathroom, I found his girlfriend’s wig and decided it would be cool to put it on and sing an awful rendition of Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams”. What. The. Hell. Only two of those cheap beers I was super buzzed. (The strong pina coladas aided in this feeling.) Honestly, the beer is on the terrible side and has a funny aftertaste, but if you want to get buzzed on the cheap, put them in the freezer to get them super cold and chug them like you have 5 minutes to live. But I digress…

Here’s a hilarious video involving drunk pranks. Enjoy.

Dos Equis is a mexican beer (cerveza) that has two delicious types; The Lager and The Ambar (a cool way of spelling amber). I would recommend trying both but my favorite is The Lager because it’s light and refreshing, unlike a traditional lager. The Ambar is a smooth, somewhat complex amber that tastes better (at least in my opinion) with food, preferably foods with a little spice. With it having 4.8% alcohol, you can enjoy it while getting a nice, steady buzz. Besides, how can you NOT love a beer that is represented by The Most Interesting Man in the World? I even posted a compilation video of his commercials…
